We are heading into our favorite time of the year, the holiday season. One of our favorite things about the holiday season is seeing everything so festive. What better way to decorate your home for the holidays than with items created with you children? Here are five simple DIY decoration ideas to do with your little ones this year:

1. Toilet Paper Roll Mummies:

Supplies:

  • Used Toilet Paper Rolls (Paper towel rolls)
  • White Crepe Paper
  • Googly Eyes
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Optional Accessories (Glitter, pipe cleaners, etc)

Directions:

  1. Put two little dabs of glue near the edge of the top opening on opposing sides, wrap a small strip of crepe paper over the top to cover the opening.
  2. Put another small dab of glue at the top of the back of the toilet paper roll, start the crepe paper on the dab of glue and wrap the crepe paper around the roll, starting at the top and move down to the bottom of the roll. When you reach the bottom of the roll, put a dab of glue on the back of the roll and secure the crepe paper.
  3. Repeat step 2, except this time take the crepe paper around the roll in the opposite direction.
  4. Continue wrapping the roll in crepe paper until the roll is covered well.
  5. Glue googly eyes to the front of the mummy, and add any additional accessories that your little one may want.

2. Ghoulish Front Door:

Supplies:
Colored Crepe Paper(White and Two other colors)

  • Glue
  • Simple Paper(styrofoam) Plate/White Construction Paper
  • Black Construction Paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape(Whatever you feel comfortable using on your front door)

Directions:

  1. Using the black construction paper and a small/medium size cup; place the cup upside down on the black construction paper and, using a pencil, trace a circle around the cup. (Make two separate circles)
  2. Grab your paper plate (If you are using white construction paper, using a plate trace a circle on the paper, and cut out the circle); using the small black circle you just cut out glue it on the paper plate. You can make them googly eyes or you can make them look more realistic. (Do this to create 2 eyes.)
  3. With the colored crepe paper, cut strips in varying lengths. You want enough strips to create “hair” at the top of the door.
  4. Using the white crepe paper, cut a strip about 18 inches; cut 2 strips about 8-10 inches; and 3-4 smaller strips. The longest strip will be the mouth and the smaller strips will be the “stitches” and the two medium strips will be the “eyebrows”.
  5. Now that you have all of the parts, it’s time to create your monster.

3. Paper Plate Ghost:

GhostSupplies:

  • Paper Plates
  • White Crepe Paper
  • Googly eyes
  • Black Construction Paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Fishing Line(or string, yarn, etc)

Directions:

  1. Cut multiple strips (varying lengths) of the white crepe paper.
  2. Using the black construction paper, cut out fun shaped “mouths”.
  3. With the paper plate, glue the crepe strips to the back of the plate; making “ghosts tails”.
  4. Glue your googly eyes and mouth on the paper plate.
  5. Using your scissors or a hole punch, create a whole at the top of the ghost. Slip the fishing line (string) through the hole and hang where you’d like.
